Dr. Manjul Joshipura is Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon and Director, Academy of Traumatology in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. He obtained his medical degree and completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery with a Masters in Orthopaedic Surgery from Gujarat University, India. He then received higher surgical training in Orthopaedic Surgery in the United Kingdom. Subsequently, as a Rowan Nicks Scholar of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, he was a Visiting Senior Lecturer in the Surgery of Trauma at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. He utilised this opportunity to focus his learning on the organisation of trauma systems in Australia. In addition to refining his surgical skills in Orthopaedic surgery, he was exposed to the elements of organised trauma systems including team organisation, protocols, training, trauma registry, research methodology and QI tools.  Upon his return to India, Dr Joshipura successfully used his Australian experience to advocate for a more efficient emergency medical service (EMS) and to pass EMS legislation within the state government to better support the service as a whole.

Dr Joshipura is President elect of IATSIC (International Association for Trauma Surgery and Intensive Care. He is co-editor of several WHO publications on trauma care and services and serves on the editorial board of several scientific journals.

Until January 2013 he led trauma care programme at World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva and contributed to research, policy development, advocacy and WHO guidelines on for emergency, pre-hospital and trauma care for Ministries of Health. He has extensive experience in developing and supporting trauma care systems in a variety of settings. He pioneered structured education and QI efforts in trauma care in India and several other countries.

Dr Joshipura also leads the global activities for the fifth pillar of post-crash care of the UN Decade of Action of Road Safety and is responsible for the creation of the Global Alliance for the Care of the Injured.

Dr Joshipura is a Co-Principal Investigator for AITSC. He is actively involved as an advisor for Intervention 3, using his expertise in Trauma Quality Improvement and education for developing a standardised approach in the local context.
